# Versioning and immutability

These are the data protection and data lifecycle functions.

### Versioning

| Aspect         | Detail                                                     |
| -------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| Activation     | It is enabled in the repository subscription               |
| What it does   | Preserves previous versions when an object is overwritten  |
| What it is for | Go back to a good version after an overwrite or corruption |

### Immutability

> Immutability locks objects against deletion or modification for a period of time, intended for retention and protection against ransomware.

### Automatic deletion

| Aspect         | Detail                                                                    |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| What it does   | Deletes objects after a period of time, according to the rules you define |
| What it is for | So the repository doesn't grow uncontrollably with expired data           |
